The concept for the Englewood Community Care Clinic began in May 2009, with Dr. Raymond James, an emergency room physician with Gulf Coast Emergency Physicians, Inc., and Dr. Mark Asperilla and Dr. David Klein, both founders of the St. Vincent DePaul Community Clinic, Inc. (now Virginia B. Andes Volunteer Clinic). The three doctors starting recruiting board members in 2009, as well as local physicians that would be willing to volunteer their services at the clinic. The newly formed Board of Directors obtained 501(c) 3 status from the Internal Revenue Service in November 2010. The clinic officially opened January 17, 2011, and has served more than 800 patients in more than 1,200 patient visits to date.
The clinic has been fortunate to partner with Charlotte County to lease the premises at 6868 San Casa Drive in Englewood for $1 per year. The clinic is open on Monday and Thursday evenings, 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Patients are seen on a walk-in basis so appointments are not necessary.
Patients are served in a welcoming and caring environment by a cadre of volunteer physicians, physician assistants, ARNPs, nurses and community members. We have been fortunate to recruit 16 physicians and 25 nurses to volunteer to provide patient care at the clinic. In addition, we have recruited 15 physician specialists who have agreed to provide specialty care to our patients in their respective offices.
The countless hours of dedicated volunteers have brought us to where we are today. Volunteers of all ages and stages of life donate their time, talents and treasure to the vision of the Englewood Community Care Clinic.
